In film making the 180 degree rule is a basic guideline which makes it clear what the relationship should be like between two or more characters or a character and an object. This rule is an essential element for film making. Not all film makers obey this rule; sometimes a film-maker will break the line of action to create confusion. Taking the emotion out of the audience is normally avoided as you want the audience to carry on watching and get into the film instead of confuse them.
It is used to the audience do not get confused about which way is left and right since if the 180 degree rule is not followed then one minute a character may be on the left and the next minute they may be seen on the right through the audiences eyes.
Below are two pictures to show a better understanding of the 180 degree rule.
