Here are a couple of things that Dan pointed out to improve our film opening. "The young bullies should be in school uniform", "Karma should appear just before Mercy wakes up so that the audience is aware of who she is" and "When editing make it clear so it doesn't get too confusing." From Dan's commentary I have acknowledged that the opening may appear very confusing for the audience, eventhough this is the purpose it should not be to that extent.
The opening was going to start off straight with the flashback scene of Mercy and other bullies bullying Ivory when they were young. The dream is from Ivory's perspective not Mercy's which is why Dan said to make it clear when editing and shooting. Therefore my group and I have decided that the first scene should show older Mercy sleeping in bed and then straight to the flashback dream scene and in between that, shots of Mercy sleeping to allow the audience to know that Mercy is dreaming. Our aim is to successfuly achieve in using a variety of camera shots, editing techniques, mise on scene and sound to create a well structured film opening that will appeal to our target audience. And by this I am aware that, like Thomas Sutcliffe says "Films needs to seduce their audience into long term commitment while there are many types of seduction, the temptation to go for instant arousal is almost irresistable" Our film opening needs to have a 'love at first sight' attraction to the audience and it must be continuous as well as not giving too much of the film away. It has to created enigma to allow the audience to know the characters, where they are are but develop questions like why they should be interested.
