Panic Room - Conventions of a thriller

Panic Room

I watched the opening of 'Panic Room' and i analysed what opening conventions of a thriller are.

The opening of this sequence starts off with heavy and slow intense music; this sets the mood of the film as it is a thriller. The music then turned to a fast pace and this helps to keep the audience appealed to the film; the sound of a stop watch is added to the music to help make the film seem more tense and it makes the audience wonder why is this specific sound added and how does it relate to the film. The change of the music allow the mood to get scarier as it goes along and this helps to get the audience ready for what they are about to watch. The music is very serious and this also sets the mood.

There are long birds eye view shots to show where the location of the film is; it is set in a city in America. I know that that this is set in America because later on in the opening of this sequence the characters speak in an american accent. The location of the film also seems very busy and so this makes the audience think what kind of thrillers are going to take place when there are many people in the setting.

The credits are placed on the buildings in silver/white font in capitals. This convention may be used to introduce the cast and the crew. The font is big and serious and therefore it gives a serious mood. The font is integrated into the urban setting.

The opening scene is mysterious as we go not know what is going to happen because we see the house for the first time and so do the main characters. We are all new to the house which makes us unprepared. We do not know if this house is significant however it may be significant because we are introduced to the house as well as the characters are also introduced.

Overall the conventions in a thriller includes the location, music and the credits all in which set the mood of the movie and therefore gets the audience engaged into the film and makes the audience want to keep and watching.
